Ward9.com started as a jewelry project created as a senior thesis in my last year in college. It was based on the concept of using found objects from old hospitals and asylums and repurposing them.
The objects were all then mixed with newer objects that I felt still carried the idea of these locations; glass beads, rusted copper chains, vintage broaches and earrings I disassembled, fuses, gears, and so on. The results were wearable objects that were both modern and antique.
I have been photographing and documenting abandoned structures since around 2004, gradually finding my fascination with the beautiful decayed buildings became a desire to research their history, and take an active role in their preservation.
Finding a particular interest in abandoned state hospitals, state schools and asylums, I am also active in local preservation, particularly in regards to the Atlantic Yards Project. I am based out of Brooklyn, New York and most of my photos come from the East Coast, though when afforded the time and finances, I occasionally get a chance to explore further west.
Most of my galleries are listed under pseudonyms to proect the locations I visit, particularly from vandalism. I consider myself a documentarian, first and foremost, and cannot provide you with access or permission to any of these locations, nor will I tell you where they are or how I got in. Please do not ask me.
Thank you for visiting, and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me at:
